UAL was founded in 1985 by Cooperativa de Ensino Universitario (CEU). UAL has become an example of the civil society’s capacity for initiative and entrepreneurship, establishing a project that, from the outset, has been innovative in training for citizenship and professional life, production and dissemination of knowledge, cooperation with a wide range of partners and contribution to the community. With a privileged location right in the centre of Lisbon, UAL aims to respond in a timely fashion and with quality, creativity and critical reflection to the challenges faced by higher education institutions in the complex contemporary world.

UAL’s academic structure is based on eight Departments/Faculties –
Architecture; Communication Sciences; Economic and Business Sciences; Engineering and Computer Science; International Relations; Law; History, Arts and Humanities; and Psychology – and also the Nursing School S. Francisco Xavier (ESESFM), integrated in Autonoma Group as a Polytechnic Higher Education Institution in 2020.

Autónoma offers 13 bachelor’s, 10 master’s and five doctoral degree programs. In addition, through the Autónoma Academy and the School of Arts, UAL offers dozens of postgraduate courses, MBAs and specialization courses in a wide variety of areas relevant to employability and professional success. It has eight Research Centres, its own publishing house (EDIUAL), Multimedia laboratories (UALMedia), an Arbitration Centre (CAUAL) certified by the Ministry of Justice, and also a Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and a Centre for Knowledge Transfer.

UAL is an experienced partner in the most diverse fields, offering an extensive range of services to the community. Its network of partnerships and collaborations extends all over the world, from the US to China, Europe, MENA, Latin America and Portuguese Speaking Countries, including the United Nations, the Organization of Iberian-American States, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP).
