About the project

Through a vast series of conferences and workshops open not only to students, professors and researchers but also to companies and society in general, this project aims to understand and explain the dynamics of the relationship between Europe and Asia in its multiple dimensions, focusing on the contribution of that relationship to the mutual knowledge of peoples, to business opportunities and to the enrichment of the societies of the two Continents and the World.

More information

Asia and Europe have a long history of cultural, political and economic exchanges. Despite being geographically the farthest European country from Asia, Portugal has a long history of commercial and cultural exchanges with various countries and regions, including India, Southeast Asian countries, Macao, China and Japan. This series of conferences and workshops titled “Europe and Asia: Constructions and Interactions” aims at delving into the history of the exchanges between Europe and Asia, while at the same time analyzing the current state of the two continents’ relations and what their future might entail in a turbulent and complex world. This will be done from various academic perspectives including law, politics, society, economy, culture and science, and with the contribution of numerous experts from various European countries, Asia (China, India, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Australia) and the United States.

The Autonomous University of Lisbon has a long tradition of regional studies, and this project hopes to give students a deeper understanding of the pluralism and richness of the links connecting the two continents while stimulating creativity for the potential that these relations mean in the future. Lisbon is a vibrant cosmopolitan city where people from different parts of the world, including a large Asian community, live. This makes Lisbon a privileged location to think about the past, present, and future of the interconnection between Europe and Asia.  Every region has its own features, dynamics and organizations. Only by having a specific look at each of them, can students, companies and general public learn these regions’ intricacies and understand them properly.
