Education can take many forms, encompass countless disciplines and open doors to areas we may never have imagined exploring. This diversity of learning opportunities is one of the values we promote at Diverse Alliance, an alliance of universities committed to providing students with broad, international educational experiences across a wide range of fields.
A clear example of this is Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (OHM), a Diverse Alliance member university, which this year hosted a Summer School dedicated to electronic music production.
Learning, creating and experimenting through music
During the Summer School, students from Finland, South Korea, the United States and Germany had the opportunity to learn and create together, combining technical knowledge, creativity and experimentation in an international environment.
Throughout the course, participants learned how to develop a music production from scratch using the Native Instruments Maschine hardware and software environment. Each student created their own musical piece using voice and vocal recordings, which were subsequently sampled, edited and mixed.
The programme covered different aspects of electronic music production, including:
- History of electronic music
- Electronic synthesis and sound generation
- The structure and functionality of digital audio signals
- Digital Audio Workstations (DAW – NI Maschine)
- Digital effects and signal processing
- Song arrangement and structure
- Mixing and mastering
The result was a collection of highly diverse productions, shaped by the creativity, interests and perspectives of students from different backgrounds.
An education open to multiple fields of knowledge
OHM’s Summer School is an example of how education can go beyond the fields traditionally associated with university learning. Experimenting with sound, creating a song or developing knowledge of music production can also form part of an educational experience that combines technical skills, creativity and practical learning.
At Diverse Alliance, we believe in the value of providing a diverse, international education that is open to multiple fields of knowledge. Our aim is to contribute to an educational environment where every student can find opportunities to learn, experiment and discover new interests.
