GreenScope

The GreenScope project officially began with its online kick-off meeting on 13 October 2025, bringing together higher education institutions and experts from across Europe to lay the foundation for the next three years of collaboration.

Funded under the Erasmus+ Programme (Key Action 2 – Cooperation among Organisations and Institutions in Higher Education), GreenScope aims to strengthen the digital and green capacities of universities and equip students and educators with the skills needed for the future of environmental monitoring.

What is GreenScope?

GreenScope focuses on Earth Observation (EO) and LiDAR – two cutting-edge technologies that are revolutionizing how we observe and protect our planet.

  • Earth Observation (EO) uses satellite and sensor data to track changes on Earth’s surface – from forest cover to water quality.
  • LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser pulses to create precise 3D maps of natural and built environments.

By combining these technologies, the project will help universities teach students how to monitor environmental changes, assess natural resources, and support sustainable decision-making.

Over the course of three years (2025–2028), the project will:

  • Develop an educational toolkit focused on EO and LiDAR.
  • Create a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Earth Observation (EO) and LiDAR applications for students and educators.
  • Organize innovation labs where students will tackle real-world environmental challenges.
  • Establish an open-access repository with training materials, case studies, and datasets.

Who is involved?

The project is coordinated by Algebra Bernays University (Croatia) and brings together a diverse consortium of universities and organizations:

Together, these partners combine expertise in technology, education, and environmental science to foster new generations of professionals capable of addressing Europe’s sustainability goals through data-driven innovation.

Laying the Groundwork for Greener Innovation

The partners behind GreenScope have officially launched their collaboration to bring digital innovation to environmental education across Europe. Their shared vision is clear — to equip the next generation of professionals with the skills to observe, understand, and protect our planet using cutting-edge technologies.

In the first phase of the project, the consortium will research and analyse current practices in environmental monitoring, exploring how technologies like Earth Observation (EO) and LiDAR are already being used — and where gaps in skills and knowledge still exist. This foundational research, led by Algebra Bernays University (Croatia) and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (Finland), will shape the development of a specialized curriculum and digital training toolkit, coordinated by the University of Salzburg (Austria).

The team’s next step will be to meet in person in Zagreb (19–20 November 2025) to plan the research activities in detail and strengthen collaboration for the work ahead.

Why it matters

Environmental challenges such as deforestation, water scarcity, and ecosystem loss require professionals who understand both the science and technology behind environmental monitoring. By combining digital innovation and sustainability, GreenScope supports Europe’s green and digital transitions while preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow.
