About the project
This project aims to develop a study of how unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be included in the infrastructure of communication networks due to their ability to provide coverage and expanded network capacity. There are, however, several challenges in establishing UAV-assisted communication networks in 5G and beyond.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has attracted significant attention from the communication network designers to be included in the communication network infrastructure due to its ability to provide extended network coverage and capacity. Nevertheless, there are several challenges in the way of establishing UAV-assisted communication networks in 5G and beyond. In this project, we aim to resolve the energy efficiency, delay and resource management issues by providing efficient resource management frameworks based on machine learning techniques. In this context, we investigate the UAV-assisted networks with the perspective of the interaction with the ground communication infrastructures, virtualization, and overall energy consumption and provide efficient resource management algorithms to improve overall system performance. We consider integrated aerial and ground wireless networks and provide novel resource management frameworks in which resource sharing between aerial and ground networks as well as the UAV trajectory and placement is formulated as a learning optimization problem. In addition, we also provide end-to-end solutions for integrated aerial and ground networks which are based on network virtualization and slicing. As there has recently been a great attention towards green communication as well as the energy limited nature of UAV networks, we also consider energy management in aerial and ground networks and propose novel energy harvesting models for the proposed system and optimize the average age of information (AoI) to reduce the delay in the communication network. To access the proposed schemes in a real scenario, we dedicated a research direction to the prototyping and test-bed implementation.
