Algebra Bernays University welcomed more than 90 students from around the world to the 10th anniversary edition of its International Summer School, held in Zagreb and Šibenik.
Algebra Bernays University’s International Summer School brought together students from different academic and cultural backgrounds for four weeks of intensive learning, practical projects, and international exchange. The programme covered a wide range of topics, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, marketing, mobile application development, game design, creative and data storytelling, as well as Croatian language and culture.
The programme opened with a dedicated week focusing on Croatian language and culture, bringing together around 60 students. Beyond learning the language, participants had the opportunity to discover Croatian traditions, gastronomy, history and cultural heritage, while developing connections with local communities.
“The practical approach to language learning allows students to immediately apply what they learn in real-life situations,” explained Tihana Banko, lecturer in the Croatian Language and Culture programme. She also highlighted how the course gave students the opportunity to discover the diversity of Croatia, from its natural landscapes and regional traditions to its history of innovation.
The main academic programme then continued across seven specialised courses, where students developed practical skills and contemporary digital competences. Part of the programme took place in Šibenik from 13 to 17 July, combining academic activities with opportunities to explore Croatia’s cultural and natural heritage.
This edition brought together students from more than 25 countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Madagascar, Rwanda, China and a wide range of European countries. The diversity of the participants reflected the international character that has defined the International Summer School since its creation and contributed to an environment where students could exchange perspectives, experiences and ideas.
“We launched the International Summer School to offer students much more than academic knowledge – we wanted to provide an international experience that prepares them for lifelong learning, collaboration, and the challenges of a rapidly changing world,” explained Klara Volarić, programme organiser from the International Office at Algebra Bernays University, and Lidija Šimrak, founder of the programme.
Alongside their academic programmes, participants also attended guest lectures from representatives of leading companies, including Hrvatski Telekom, whose representatives shared insights into the development of AI competences and the responsible use of artificial intelligence, drawing on the company’s award-winning campaigns.
For DIVERSE, initiatives such as this Summer School are an excellent example of how European university collaboration can create opportunities for students to learn beyond their home institutions, develop new competences, and engage with international communities.
